POINT OF INTEREST

Cervantes Theatre (Teatro Cervantes)

Calle Ramos Marín, Malaga, Andalucia, 29012

The late 19th-century Cervantes Theatre (Teatro Cervantes) experienced decades of neglect before it was renovated and reopened in 1987. Its interior remains true to the original design, with an ornate painted ceiling and gilded detailing on the horseshoe-shaped boxes and stalls. It’s Málaga’s cultural center for opera, ballet, rock and orchestral concerts, and jazz and flamenco performances.

The basics

Cervantes Theatre is usually on walking tours of Picasso’s Málaga, along with his birthplace and the Picasso Museum. But you can also experience the theater as it was meant to be seen by booking a ticket to a performance or show. You can buy tickets online or at the box office. The theater is also open for free guided visits every Wednesday from mid-morning to mid-afternoon—you’ll need to reserve your visit in advance.

Things to know before you go

  • The theater is fully accessible and features ramps, a lift, and seat and box numbers in braille.

  • English subtitles accompany some productions.

  • Arrive at the theater early to explore and admire the architecture before your show.

  • The Cervantes Theatre often teams up with its counterpart, Teatro Echegaray, an 80-year-old cinema, to host joint events.

  • Keep in mind that some seats have a restricted or limited view.

How to get there

Cervantes Theatre is in Málaga’s city center, an easy walk from Plaza de la Merced. Several bus routes stop close to the theater. Download the EMT Málaga app to navigate the city’s public transit system. Taxis and rideshare services are also readily available, and you can rent bikes through private companies to get around.

When to get there

The theater’s ticket office is open Tuesday–Friday from mid-morning to evening, with a break for lunch. On Saturdays, it opens from 6pm to 8:30 pm, and on Mondays, Sundays, and holidays, it opens one hour before the show starts until 30 minutes after it begins. Ticket prices vary according to performance and level of seating. Most shows typically start between 6:30pm and 8pm. The Málaga Film Festival is held here every March.

The Interactive Music Museum (Museo Interactivo de la Música)

Often abbreviated to MIMMA, Málaga’s Museum of Music is an interactive cultural option. You can play many instruments, including violins, guitars, drums, didgeridoos from Australia, and ancient Celtic bagpipes. In MIMMA’s Living Lab, you can test new products and services related to music, sound, and multimedia.
