Inside this interactive art experience, visitors are tasked with finding a 10-year-old character named Jared who has gone missing, by sorting through emails, videos, photos, and the boy’s drawings. Located at Grapevine Mills, just north of the Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport, Meow Wolf’s The Real Unreal is set in a suburban house filled with psychedelic colors, featuring the art collective’s signature quirky touches.
The basics
Like Meow Wolf’s other immersive experiences, “The Real Unreal” in Grapevine, Texas, is a cross between an art gallery and an escape room. It’s set in a fantastical environment inspired by a typical suburban home, where visitors are transported through refrigerators and washing machines. The venue, which highlights work from local artists, also includes the Matt King Mystery Center, a community space for events and activities, and has a café on-site.
Things to know before you go
- The experience is accessible and navigable by crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, and scooters. Meow Wolf does not have wheelchairs to rent or loan, but wheelchairs are available at the Grapevine Mills mall management office.
- The Grapevine Portal Pass offers unlimited general admission to the exhibition for one year.
- Lighting effects include strobe lights and other pulsating lights, dance club lighting, chaser lights, and more. Meow Wolf provides a sensory guide to help visitors plan ahead, as well as sensory items like earplugs and noise-canceling headphones.
- Outside food and drink are not allowed in the exhibition (except for empty water bottles), and you must have a ticket to visit the café.
How to get there
Meow Wolf’s The Real Unreal is located on the east side of Grapevine Mills mall between Neiman Marcus and Fieldhouse, near entrance 2. It’s about a 10-minute drive from the airport via TX-97. To get around the Dallas–Fort Worth area, consider renting a car as public transit is limited.
When to get there
The Real Unreal is open daily, but operating hours can vary, so be sure to purchase tickets before going. On select evenings, the space also hosts adults-only exhibition hours. To avoid crowds, consider visiting on a weekday or morning. Grapevine Mills mall is open daily from morning to evening.
Visit the aquarium
Also at Grapevine Mills, SEA LIFE® Aquarium is home to over 5,000 species and multiple exhibits, making it a great family-friendly activity. There’s the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, which is dedicated to conserving and rehabilitating sea turtles, while the underwater ocean tunnel is filled with fish, sharks, rays, and the rescued turtles. A behind-the-scenes guided tour shows how the staff feeds and cares for the creatures.
