Kansas City, Missouri isn't just one of the best places to dine in the United States: It's really one of the best places in the world to tuck in, primarily because of its signature gastronomic specialty. While there's plenty of variety when it comes to cuisine here in the most centrally located city in the Lower 48, its most defining cookery is, of course, barbecue. Indeed, Kansas City-style barbecue ranks easily among the most celebrated expressions of that low-and-slow, smoker-based technique of cooking meat, making a little BBQ-joint-hopping safari easily one of the premier ways to experience KCMO. In doing so, you'll get to survey all of the individual twists on the basic dry-rub, lusciously sauced template and at the same time you'll be honoring the legacy of Henry Perry, a pioneering Black entrepreneur whose smoked-meat innovations beginning in the early 1900s have earned him the title of the "Father of Kansas City Barbecue." What follows is a roundup of some of the top BBQ spots in Kansas City, though narrowing down such a list is mighty hard (and mighty tasty) work.
Gates Bar-B-Q
- Address: 3205 Main St., Kansas City, MO 64111 (but multiple locations)
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
Among the legendary powerhouses of Kansas City-style barbecue, Gates boasts direct links to Henry Perry, on account one of Perry's employees, Arthur Pinkard, helped George Gates launch his first BBQ eatery way back in 1946. Now available across the metro area courtesy of six locations, Gates Bar-B-Q is a Kansas City institution and a pilgrimage site for BBQ aficionados, with many still regarding its sauce (the Original Classic) as the best around. From the signature "Hi, may I help you?" greeting and the Struttin' Man mascot to the mouthwatering ribs and medley of sides, Gates is simply a must-do and very much still very much one of the best BBQ spots in Kansas City.
Scott's Kitchen & Catering at Hangar 29
- Address: 11920 N. Ambassador Dr., Kansas City, MO 64153
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
Right on the doorstep of the Kansas City International Airport, Scott's Kitchen & Catering at Hangar 29 couldn't be a more conveniently situated BBQ stopover for travelers. And, combining as it does respect for history and tradition with the courage to explore and play around, the restaurant serves as a fine introduction to regional barbecue. The meticulously tended housemade barbecue sauce and brisket rub are among the stars of the show and burritos and tacos add some variety to the usual suspects on the menu.
Buck Tui
- Address: 6737 W. 75th St., Overland Park, KS 662054
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
As Arthur Bryant's molasses twist on Henry Perry's sauce exemplifies, innovation's always been part of the barbecue story. At Buck Tui, you've got a very innovative international crossover to lose your mind over: namely, Kansas City-style barbecue beautifully jumbled together with Northern Thai cuisine, a "smoke meets spice" equation (as the restaurant phrases it) that is downright transcendent. From the acclaimed Brisket Rangoons and immaculate brisket sandwiches enhanced with creamy tiger cry sauce to the Red Curry Burnt Ends, the Pineapple Rib Fried Rice and the BBQ plates featuring Isaan Thai Sausage, it's almost indisputable to call this a culinary match made in heaven. (It's also worth noting that the cocktail menu is as top-class as the eats).
Arthur Bryant's
- Address: 1727 Brooklyn Ave, Kansas City, MO 64127
Just as legendary as Gates—the two, really, are neck-in-neck when it comes to the most iconic Kansas City BBQ pit—Arthur Bryant's can also claim strong "Father of Kansas City Barbecue" pedigree: Arthur Bryant and his brother Charlie were employees of Henry Perry's, so this is another eatery directly sprung from that foundational lineage. If Perry is the Father of Kansas City Barbecue, Arthur Bryant stands tall as the "King of Ribs," ensuring himself immortality in the annals of regional BBQ early on by sweetening Perry's O.G. peppery, vinegar-based sauce with molasses. Arthur Bryant's is especially famous for its burnt ends, those crisped peripheries of barbecue brisket once (somehow) considered waste scraps and now yours to enjoy on a to-die-for open-face sandwich at this enshrined sanctum of smoked meat.
Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que
- Address: 3002 W. 47th Ave, Kansas City, KS 66103
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
The beloved gas-station eatery of Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que has much to recommend it, yet there is no higher-profile menu item here than the Z-Man Sandwich. Regarded by many as nothing short of a masterpiece featuring thin-sliced brisket that will, in short, knock your socks off. Though, it must be said, the pulled pork is also rave-worthy and the French fries alone, dressed up and zested out with 20-plus spices, threaten to steal the show.
Jack Stack Barbecue
- Address: 4747 Wyandotte St., Kansas City, MO 64112 (but multiple locations)
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
From the crown beef short ribs, the Stack sandwich (stuffed with smoked sausage and beef brisket) and the Honey-Chipotle Chicken to the immaculate Hickory Pit Beans—which prove, once again, that BBQ sides can be as hauntingly delicious as the main course—Jack Stack Barbecue still knocks it out of the park as it has since 1957. A generous 10 to 12 hours of quality time over hickory woodsmoke gets the Jack Stack meat over the line of perfection.
Q39
- Address: 1000 W. 39th St., Kansas City, MO 64111 (but multiple locations)
- AAA Rating: Diamond Approved
English pitmaster Philip Thompson (who assumed the helm from local stalwart Rob Magee after he passed away) proves you don't need to have been born anywhere near the heartland of American barbecue to do it justice. His illustrious, high-end culinary chops shine at Q39 Midtown, where you can happily swoon over starters such as Fire-Roasted Poblano Cheddar Cornbread and Crispy Cauliflower Bites, then move into ecstasy territory courtesy of blue-ribbon winners such as the Mr. Burns burnt-ends sandwich, the KC Cheesesteak, the Q Tacos and the "best wings on the planet."
Chef J BBQ
- Address: 1401 W. 13th St. Suite G, Kansas City, MO 64102
Superstar barbecue ribs influenced by Lone Star State traditions are among the staples at this West Bottoms gem, which nowadays serves up goodness at Kansas City Chiefs games as well. Alongside the meatiness, don't neglect the Hickory Smoked Beans, the Smoked Elotes or the Chipotle Slaw and be sure to save room (really) for the delish Chef J Banana Pudding.
LC's Bar-B-Q
- Address: 5800 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64219
Known for its devoted following, LC's Bar-B-Q has stayed in the family since the passing, in 2021, of its founder and namesake, L.C. Richardson. And it remains a surefire, straight-shooting contender when it comes to the best BBQ restaurants in Kansas City, whipping out delectable beef and pork burnt ends, scrap sandwiches, smoked chicken and more meaty marvels alongside irresistible sides such as onion rings and jalapeño poppers.
Woodyard Bar-B-Que
- Address: 3001 Merriam Lane, Kansas City, MO 66106
Another can't-lose choice for no-frills Kansas City-style barbecue goodness, Woodyard Bar-B-Que tempts with a real smorgasbord of BBQ platters: from pulled pork, smoked wings, brisket, ribs and burnt ends to sausage, ham and turkey. The Triple-P sandwich features a terrific trio of pulled pork, smoked ham and bacon (dressed up with some provolone) and the hot ribs do indeed have a kick.
