1. Baltimore, Maryland

A short trip by commuter rail will take you from D.C.'s Union Station to the heart of Baltimore — a walkable and bustling community that feels distinct from D.C. Its accessibility makes it a good choice for a weekend getaway from Washington D.C., alongside its wide variety of things to do and see.

Recommended accommodation: For a memorable experience, stay in the historic Fells Point neighborhood — a lovely waterfront area that's easily explored when the upscale Sagamore Pendry Baltimore is your home base. 3. Ocean City, Maryland

Some of the best spots for a weekend getaway from Washington, D.C. stand out because they offer such a refreshing change of pace—and Ocean City is a prime example. 4. Chincoteague, Virginia

Offering a relaxed alternative to Ocean City, Chincoteague calls for a bit more driving when your journey begins in D.C. The drive is reasonable for a weekend away, being just over three hours in length. This stunning island is perhaps best known for its wild ponies, but there's no denying the appeal of its rugged beauty, with visitors spending their time hiking and picnicking. If possible, head to Chincoteague in July for the annual Pony Swim.

5. Williamsburg, Virginia

If you feel drawn to the historic structures of D.C. but want to step into the shoes of a colonial figure for a day, head to Williamsburg to immerse yourself in a historic neighborhood like no other. Add an extra day to your Colonial escape and explore all three corners of the iconic Historic Triangle: Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown — some of the best spots for a weekend getaway from Washington D.C.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Take a break from the historic attractions and enjoy a thrill-seeking experience at one of the region's finest theme parks. Rides like the DarKoaster and the Loch Ness Monster are sure to get your heart racing, but you can also hang out with Clydesdale horses and Scottish Highland cattle.

6. Harpers Ferry

Easily one of the most underrated spots within driving distance of D.C., Harpers Ferry deserves a visit because it boasts such wonderful historic attractions — not to mention excellent hiking opportunities. It's even accessible via Amtrak's Floridian service.

Recommended accommodations: For convenience there’s the Quality Inn, which is just steps away from the famed Appalachian Trail. Otherwise, consider staying at The Inn At Charles Town, which although not technically in Harpers Ferry, is a short drive away and a great option if you want to hit the casino.

Suggested activities:

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Hiking trails, living history presentations, historic buildings...this amazing attraction has it all. Highlights include the John Brown Museum, the Industry Museum and the Provost Marshal Office. For an amazing view, climb to Jefferson Rock.
