Alexandria Market Square
Alexandria’s Market Square serves as the focal point for the city; a spot for locals and visitors alike to sit, take a break, and enjoy a variety of events. Located right beside City Hall and once an open field, the current brick plaza and fountain is the site of a weekly farmers market, the annual holiday tree lighting, and festivities throughout the year.
The basics
Many guided tours of Old Town Alexandria include a stop at Market Square. On Saturday mornings, you’ll find the Old Town Farmers' Market here: Running for more than two centuries, the market is where George Washington purportedly sold his produce from Mount Vernon. During the peak season, vendors sell a range of items, including fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, cheeses, breads, pastries, fresh pasta, pickled vegetables, cut flowers, potted plants, soaps, and paintings.
Things to know before you go
- In Old Town, you’ll find kiosks to help with navigation located at designated intersections along King Street, Cameron Street, and the waterfront.
- The market is wheelchair accessible.
- Pets are not permitted in Market Square during the farmers market.
How to get there
The Old Town Farmers' Market is located in front of Alexandria City Hall in Market Square. It’s accessible via the King Street Trolley and DASH buses, routes 30, 31, and 34. There’s also a parking garage. Alexandria is located just five miles south of Washington DC, and can be reached via Metrorail, Amtrak, and water taxi.
When to get there
The farmers market is open every Saturday from 7am to 12pm. You’ll experience the warmest temperatures during the summer months, while spring brings cherry blossoms, which are a huge attraction in the area. Late October is typically peak leaf-peeping season. Although winter can be bitterly cold, especially along the waterfront, the holidays offer plenty of festive activities in and around the town.
Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
Just off the square you’ll find Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, where you can take a guided tour and learn about the various potions on display. There’s also a collection of archival materials, including journals, prescription and formula books, ledgers, orders, and invoices. Be aware that the museum is not wheelchair accessible beyond the first floor.
