Alta Ski Area

10010 Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, Alta, Utah, UT, 84092

One of the United State’s oldest ski areas, the Alta Ski Area was founded in 1939. Located east of Salt Lake City, the area was originally a silver mining center, then a ghost town before it became revitalized as a skiing hub. Today, Alta is known for its steep slopes and deep powder snow—the yearly average for snowfall is 551 inches (1,400 cm).

The basics

Located on the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains, Alta Ski Area might be renowned for its expert-level hills and ski runs. Still, more than half of the terrain is suitable for beginner- and intermediate-level skiers. It remains one of only three ski resorts in the U.S. that prohibits snowboarders. Alta is popular for weekend excursions and day trips, which means you’ll find no end to places to stay overnight.

Things to know before you go

  • Alta boasts over 116 runs spread across 2,200 acres (890 hectares), so plan to spend at least a few days on the slopes.
  • Alta Ski Area offers a “Ski with a Ranger” program on weekends and holidays. Skiers can learn about everything from winter ecology to the area’s silver mining history.
  • For those looking to perfect their downhill moves, lessons are available (both individual and season-long) at the all-ages Alf Engen Ski School.
  • No need to bring your own gear: you can rent or purchase ski equipment at a variety of Alta shops.
  • Parking and ski lift reservations can be made online through Alta Ski Area’s official website.

How to get there

Alta is located southeast of Salt Lake City at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, about 45 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport. In addition to private car rentals and ride-sharing apps, you’ll also find public transportation options. If you don’t want to rent a car, the reservation-based Cottonwood Connect shuttle runs Thursdays through Sundays and on holidays. There’s also the UTA ski bus—Alta season passes will score you unlimited free rides.

When to get there

Alta’s ski season runs roughly from mid-December through April, with the resort usually beginning to welcome guests in November. If you’re looking for serious snowpack, come during peak season in January and February when Utah gets slammed with the biggest snowstorms. March is also known for its heavy snowfall, although warmer days can sometimes bring slushier conditions.

Summertime at Alta

Alta becomes a hub for warm-weather hiking and mountain biking trails when the snow thaws. You’ll find colorful wildflowers, sub-alpine wetlands, and mountain-dwelling wildlife species, like elk. Look online for a complete map of trails and backcountry campsites, with routes ranging from beginner-level loops to advanced switchback climbs.
