Artechouse NYC
New York City, NY
In a city with an abundance of traditional art galleries, Artechouse NYC presents a different type of art experience. Its exhibits are experiential and combine art with science and technology. Various digital artists and leading organizations—including NASA and the Nobel Prize Museum—have collaborated with Artechouse NYC to create innovative presentations.
The basics
Instead of just standing in front of an artwork and passively looking at it, you walk through rooms filled with projections, lights, and sound at Artechouse NYC. The presentations (or exhibits) change periodically, so even repeat visits will likely reveal something new. It's easy to visit while exploring Chelsea’s Meatpacking District and Greenwich Village. To visit independently, purchase tickets in advance online.
Things to know before you go
- General admission (timed entry) and “anytime tickets” are available; the latter cost more. Children under 4 are free.
- The museum space is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs. Strong lighting and loud sounds are used in some programs.
- Download the free Artechouse XR app before your visit to add another layer to your experience.
How to get there
Artechouse NYC is located in Chelsea Market on West 15th Street, in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. The entrance is between Ninth and 10th Avenues. The nearest subway station is the 14th Street/8th Avenue station (A, C, E, and L trains), a block away. Driving here isn’t advised as there’s no dedicated parking.
When to get there
Artechouse NYC is open daily from mid-morning until late evening. Sessions run every 30 minutes and last for an hour. Arrive on time as the entrance is opened promptly. The onsite XR Bar, an “extended reality bar,” is open daily from early afternoon until evening, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday.
Other offbeat galleries in New York City
As well as cultural institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, visit some more unusual art museums in New York. Fans of street art should check out the Welling Court Mural Project in Astoria, Queens; ink aficionados the Daredevil Tattoo Museum near Manhattan’s Chinatown; and lovers of small spaces the Mmuseumm, a freight elevator in Lower Manhattan that’s been turned into an exhibition space for overlooked objects.
