Astoria
New York City, NY
Astoria is a colorful residential neighborhood in Queens with Greek immigrant roots and a growing Little Egypt area. A hidden gem destination for travelers interested in exploring away from Manhattan, it's home to more than a few worthy museums and public spaces, such as the Museum of the Moving Image and Socrates Sculpture Park.
The basics
Cross on the Queensboro Bridge over the East River from Midtown Manhattan, and you’ll hit the southern edge of Astoria, which reaches north roughly to Ditmars Boulevard. Without the name recognition of Williamsburg or Dumbo, the neighborhood is a hidden gem—walking tours of the area typically focus on local diversity, celebrating the food and culture of “Greektown” and the growing influence of Egyptian, other Middle Eastern, and Latin American immigrants.
Things to know before you go
The neighborhood is an ideal destination for foodies looking for restaurants serving diverse cuisine.
Take kids to Astoria Park’s playgrounds, walking paths, and picnic spots.
Expect a relaxed pace with fewer crowds compared to Manhattan.
How to get there
Astoria is in northwestern Queens, across the East River from Manhattan. You can reach it by taking the N or W subway lines from Midtown or the M60-SBS bus from the Upper West Side, which also connects to LaGuardia Airport. For a scenic route, take the NYC ferry to nearby Long Island City and continue by bus or rideshare.
When to get there
Generally, visiting New York City in spring or fall is best as the weather is usually pleasant outside. While you could easily spend a day exploring Astoria, you will get the most out of it if you visit when a neighborhood cultural festival is happening, such as the long-standing Greek Festival typically held in spring.
Where is Little Egypt in Astoria?
Little Egypt is on Steinway Street in Astoria, roughly between Astoria Boulevard and 28th Avenue. Visit to find a mix of Egyptian and Mediterranean restaurants, hookah bars, coffee shops, and Middle Eastern grocery stores. The area is also home to Kabab Cafe, the first Arabic-Egyptian restaurant in the area, opened in 1987.
