POINT OF INTEREST

Baker Park

Frederick, MD, 21701

Popular with locals, this 58-acre (23-hectare) community park in Frederick has bike paths, a lake, and multiple children’s playgrounds, among other recreational spots. Its most distinctive feature, though, is the granite tower with a 49-bell carillon inside, which you can hear during the weekly Sunday recital. Each Independence Day, the park also plays host to Frederick’s biggest celebrations.

The basics

If you’re road-tripping through Maryland’s historic towns, stop at Baker Park and take a stroll. This sprawling park has scenic creekside walking trails, and there are plenty of picnic tables in case you’d like to bring a packed lunch. In the summer, the park regularly hosts outdoor concerts and other special events, plus there are tennis and soccer fields, a swimming pool, and benches if you prefer to relax and take in the views.

Things to know before you go

  • Baker Park is a great spot for families. Not only are there several areas for children to play in, but lots of space for kids to run around and burn off some energy.

  • Keep an eye out for ducks and geese, which often visit Culler Lake. Many people give them bread, but that’s a big no-no. If you want to feed them, stick to lettuce or kale, broccoli, corn (not popcorn), rice, or non-citrus fruits.

  • The Maryland sun is strong in the summer, so be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen.

  • Don’t miss the Swinging Bridge, a picturesque suspension footbridge. It’s a popular site for photographs.

  • History buffs should check out Schifferstadt Architectural Museum, a well-preserved German colonial home from the mid-18th century, located at the northern end of the park. It can be visited by guided tour.

How to get there

Baker Park is right in the middle of Frederick, close to restaurants, museums, and other attractions. The city is about an hour’s drive from Washington DC, making it a popular day trip from the capital. If you’re coming from the Baltimore area, count on around 50 minutes to an hour by car, depending on traffic.

When to get there

The biggest event of the year for Baker Park is July 4, when the community hosts a rollicking Independence Day party. Expect fireworks, concerts, and food and drink vendors. For a quieter experience, visit on a weekday in the spring, when the gardens are in full bloom; weekends get busier, but the park is large enough that it rarely feels crowded. Carillon recitals take place year-round, on Sundays at 12:30pm.

Exploring Frederick’s thriving culinary scene

While this quaint Maryland town might be best known for its colonial history, stick around to check out its restaurant and bar scene. The Tasting Room is known for its New American menu, with fusion-inspired offerings like Spanish shrimp and filet mignon carpaccio, while JoJo’s Restaurant and Tap House is best for craft beer and upscale bistro eats (don’t miss the lavender crème brulée).
