Devoted to the life and works of its namesake, Victoria’s Robert Bateman Centre is home to the largest collection of Bateman paintings in the world. The gallery invites visitors to discover the natural world through the eyes of the legendary Canadian painter and naturalist.
The Basics
Exhibitions showcase Bateman’s wildlife paintings, sculptures, and drawings. With both originals and reproductions on display, you can see a comprehensive collection of his works, including a number of rare pieces. Highlights include the Birdsong Gallery, where Bateman’s bird portraits are brought to life with interactive birdsong audio, and an ever-changing programme of exhibits that tend to feature works by both Bateman and other notable wildlife artists and photographers.
Things to Know Before You Go
There is an admission fee to enter the Robert Bateman Centre, with discounted entrance for under 18s and over 65s.
Free street parking is available for up to 90 minutes outside of the gallery.
The museum is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to Get There
The Robert Bateman Centre is located in the Steamship Terminal in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. It’s a short walk from most downtown attractions or else a number of buses stop along the harbor.
When to Get There
The center is open daily year-round, but guided tours are only held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Regardless of what time you visit, you’re likely to enjoy minimal crowds.
