Belasco Theatre
New York City, NY
New York City’s Belasco Theatre is a historic Broadway gem that’s drawn theatergoers for more than a hundred years. The venue boasts ornate decor, intricate ceiling designs, and plush seating. Here, guests are captivated by the acclaimed performances as well as the theater's unique history, including rumored ghost sightings.
The basics
Visit the Belasco Theatre and experience a piece of Broadway's rich history. Marvel at the beautifully preserved architecture, including gilded details and intricate woodwork. Catch a live performance and feel close to the action thanks to the theater's intimate design, which was intended to evoke a living room. Many visitors are also drawn to stories about the landmark as a haunted theater, including tales about the ghost of founder David Belasco, who once lived upstairs.
Things to know before you go
- For the best views, aim for seats in the center of the orchestra section or front mezzanine.
- Plan to arrive 30-45 minutes before showtime so you can explore the theater’s historic decor.
- Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in the orchestra section.
How to get there
The Belasco Theatre is in the heart of NYC’s Theater District. It’s easy to reach by subway—take the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, or S to Times Square-42nd Street, or take the B, D, F, or M to the 42nd Street-Bryant Park stop. Taxis and rideshare services are also readily available.
When to get there
For a buzzing atmosphere, consider going to the Belasco Theatre during Broadway’s peak seasons: spring (March–May), when new shows debut, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s. Springtime usually has mild weather, making it enjoyable to explore the city, while the holiday season offers lots of other festive attractions to see. For a less crowded experience, consider a midweek matinee or evening show as opposed to the weekends.
Hudson Theatre
Just down the street from the Belasco Theatre, you’ll find another historic venue—the Hudson Theatre. Known for its elegant Beaux-Arts architecture and intricate details, the space was recently restored and now includes modern amenities and wheelchair accessibility. In addition to seeing a performance, visitors can also take a guided behind-the-scenes tour of the building.
