POINT OF INTEREST

Berghain

Am Wriezener bhf., Berlin, Germany, 10243

Berghain, a techno music mecca in Berlin’s Friedrichshain, is revered as one of the world’s most challenging nightclubs to enter. Housed in a former power plant, the club makes the most of its industrial steel and concrete architecture, which sets the stage for an unparalleled experience. As its infamous door policy attests, securing entry is tricky, but world-class techno awaits.

The basics

Travelers often encounter Berghain on Berlin club tours, which delve into the city's techno scene, though they may only showcase the venue's exterior. Additionally, Berghain's origins as a gay club make it a highlight on LGBTQ+ tours, revealing its role in Berlin's queer culture. The venue’s notoriously strict door policy means that showing up and waiting in line doesn't guarantee that the bouncers will let you inside.

Things to know before you go

  • Photography is strictly prohibited inside; you must cover all smartphones with the provided stickers.

  • Restrooms lack mirrors, which adds to the club’s ambiance.

  • You can test your entry appeal with an online simulator designed by the club's head bouncer, Sven Marquardt.

  • Bachelor (stag) parties are explicitly prohibited from entering the club.

  • The club's main room primarily plays techno music, while the smaller Panorama Bar upstairs offers house music.

How to get there

To reach Berghain via public transportation, take the U1 subway line to Warschauer Strasse station. From there, it's a 10-15 minute walk following signs toward Oberbaumbrücke and Köpenicker Strasse. Alternatively, you can take a tram to Warschauer Strasse; Berghain is located at Am Wriezener Bahnhof, intersecting with Köpenicker Strasse.

When to get there

Berghain is typically open from Fridays through Mondays, with Saturday nights being the busiest. Entry is notoriously selective, and lines can be lengthy. Aim for Sunday mornings when lines tend to be shorter to enhance your chances of entry and sidestep crowds. Arriving early on Sundays can offer a smoother experience than battling the peak Saturday night rush.

The dress code at Berghain

The dress code at Berghain is a hotly debated topic among club-goers, often centering around the significance of wearing casual black attire. While it's widely believed that wearing black is the safest bet, the key is to strike a balance between standing out and blending in seamlessly with the club's vibe. Be authentic to your style, but try not to look too out of place, either.
