Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial
Genslerstraße 66, Berlin, Germany, 13055
A haunting reminder of the Cold War era, the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, formerly a Stasi prison, stands as a testament to the political persecution endured by thousands in the former East Germany. Once the main remand prison for those under investigation, it's now a museum that was founded by former inmates to give visitors insights into the tough realities of life under the Stasi.
The basics
The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial can only be visited as part of a guided tour—a unique learning experience, as the tours are typically led by former prisoners and historians, and offer firsthand insights into the harsh realities of GDR state security. Following your guide, the route explores the underground cells and the history of the 1953 workers’ uprising, as well as the site’s use as an espionage data processing center, providing an educational journey through a turbulent era.
