POINT OF INTEREST

Boulder Creek Path

Boulder, CO

Providing access to Boulder’s vibrant downtown, multiple green spaces, and cultural spots along the way, this scenic, multi-use trail runs for 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) alongside Boulder Creek. It’s a serene route for walking, biking, and jogging, with beautiful views of Colorado’s natural surroundings.

The basics

For runners, cyclists, skaters, joggers, walkers, and more, the Boulder Creek Path may just be the best way to see the eponymous city. There are three unofficial sections: The eastern section starts near the Stazio Ballfields, with access to grassland and several parks; the middle section connects to the city’s urban side, including the University of Colorado campus, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and downtown; and the western section of the trail heads into the hilly Boulder Canyon.

Head out on a bike tour of the city, and you’ll likely end up on the trail at some point. Otherwise, pop onto the trail from downtown to get a taste of Boulder’s easy-access wilds.

Things to know before you go

The trail varies from asphalt to concrete to dirt, depending on your location. Several other trails connect to the Boulder Creek Path, if you’re looking for a longer sojourn. Pedestrians, rejoice—there are no street crossings on the Boulder Creek Path.

How to get there

While you can access the Boulder Creek Path from almost anywhere—including the UC–Boulder campus and the Boulder Public Library—Eben G. Fine Park, on the trail’s western end, is a recommended starting point. If you’re driving, park in one of the downtown lots, and enter the trail from spots like the Museum of Contemporary Art.

When to get there

The Boulder Creek Path is incredibly popular, so don’t expect to have this scenic trail to yourself (and cyclists should expect slow-moving pedestrians). If you’d like a quieter experience, go for a stroll around sunrise or later into the evening. It’s best to avoid the trail during inclement weather, especially flooding.

The e-bike buzz

E-bikes are growing in popularity, and whether you own one or haven’t ever known one, Boulder—and the Boulder Creek Path—is a great starting point. On your own or on a tour, you can wander for miles, including to and around Boulder’s fabulous Flatirons, a gentle mountain range that starts right in Boulder’s backyard.
