Breakneck Ridge Loop
472 Bear Mountain-Beacon Highway, Cold Spring, NY, 10516
The Breakneck Ridge Loop is a hugely popular and highly challenging round-trip trail to the top of Breakneck Ridge—a mountain alongside the Hudson River known for its dramatic cliffs. The roughly 3.5-mile (5.6 kilometers) trail is reasonably short but has extreme elevation gains and is potentially dangerous—hence the name.
The basics
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Breakneck Ridge Station near the trailhead makes getting to the trail relatively straightforward when the train runs on weekends. But completing the trail—one of the most strenuous hikes in the Hudson Valley—requires some planning. Wear the right hiking shoes and prepare to scramble up steep, rocky terrain with your feet and hands. The rail runs east from the Hudson River, quickly gains elevation, turns north, and swings back toward the river—and can be completed in about half a day.
Things to know before you go
Hikers should never attempt the trail in winter or during periods of rain, as potentially fatal injuries can occur when steep, rocky sections become wet.
This trail is considered one of the steepest and most complex in the Hudson Valley—be prepared for a challenge.
There is no sun cover on most of the trail—bring more than enough water and stay hydrated.
This trail is not suitable for children or dogs.
How to get there
The trail is in Hudson Highlands State Park, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of New York City. You can find the trailhead along State Route 9D half a mile (.8 kilometers) south of the Breakneck Ridge MTA rail station—during weekdays, the train stops at Cold Spring, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) south. It's a roughly 70-minute drive by car along the Sprain Brook Parkway and State Route 9D. Rideshares from Beacon are an option.
When to get there
Said to be among the most popular hikes in the US, the Breakneck Ridge Trail can be very crowded on weekends and public holidays. If you want to hike with fewer people on the trail and more parking available along State Route 9D, visit on a weekday. Attempting Breakneck during periods of rain, which occur year-round in New York State, is strongly discouraged.
How hard is Breakneck Ridge Loop?
It’s tough. Here are the specs: It's roughly 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain with 500 feet (380 meters) gained within the first quarter mile. The most challenging part might be the climb over steep, rugged, open rock face. Many hiking websites give the trail their highest challenge rating.
