Campus Martius Park
800 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI, 48226
This small park in the heart of downtown Detroit is a meeting place and hub for all kinds of activity. It features an ice rink and light displays in the winter, a sandy beach in the summer, and other seasonal and social events. Whenever you’re in town, stop by to see what’s happening in the park.
The basics
Campus Martius Park is at Detroit’s historical center, and while it was only developed into the park it is now in the early 2000s, the design of the site aligns with the original plans for the city dating from the early 19th century. Many people visit independently while spending time in Detroit, and guided walking tours also sometimes stop at the park, or pass by.
Things to know before you go
Many activities and facilities here are free, but others are ticketed, such as the winter ice-skating rink.
You’ll often find food trucks in the park, and there are many other restaurants and bars around its perimeter.
The park has a drinking fountain and public restrooms.
How to get there
Campus Martius Park is in downtown Detroit. Several major streets lead here, including West Fort Street, Michigan Avenue, and Woodward Avenue. Finding a parking spot can be difficult during busy times, so look for parking garages instead. Several bus stops and light rail stations are close to the park.
When to get there
The park’s skating rink is open between November and March, while a sandy beach with loungers is set up between May and October. Special events and activities also take place seasonally, such as ice hockey clinics through the winter, and a holiday tree and Kwanzaa festivities in December. Whichever season you visit, there’s likely to be something happening in the park.
Detroit’s historical buildings
Several of Detroit’s most beautiful and important historical buildings are located near Campus Martius Park, so it’s worth exploring the area on your own or taking a guided architecture walking tour. The art deco skyscrapers are especially noteworthy, so don’t forget to look up. The Guardian Building and Penobscot Building are southwest of the park, and the David Stott Building northwest. All are a short walk from the park.
