Carlyle House Historic Park is home to an 18th-century historic house-turned-museum in Old Town Alexandria. The Georgian-style mansion was built by Alexandria’s founder, John Carlyle, and became a center of social and political life during the early days of the city. Visitors can explore the home to get an intimate look at life during this period, courtesy of garments, furnishings, artifacts, and more.
The basics
Take a guided tour of Carlyle House to learn about the history of this restored 18th-century mansion, including the lives of the enslaved people who worked here. The garden features brick walkways, benches, boxwood parterres, and a cutting garden, making for a charming respite. In addition to tours, the house hosts programs for school children, special events, exhibits, and lectures. Guided tours of Alexandria usually stop at the Carlyle House; the museum staff also offers guided tours throughout the day.

How to get there
Located a block from the Alexandria waterfront (next to Market Square), Carlyle House Historic Park is easily accessible via public transit, including the free King Street trolley and DASH bus routes 30, 31, and 34. It’s also a short walk from the water taxi terminal. The Metro and Amtrak stations are about a 25-minute walk from the house.
When to get there
Guided tours of the Carlyle House are available every day except Wednesdays, starting at 10am or 12pm. The last tour takes place at 3pm. The site is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Check the website for the most up-to-date information on events and classes.
Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden
Another historic house in Alexandria, the Lee-Fendall House Museum & Garden served as a residence starting in 1785, as well as a hospital during the Civil War. It offers a look at 19th- and early 20th-century history and family life. Furnishings on display include a large collection of items from the Lee family and period pieces produced by local and regional craftsmen.
