Casa Lleó i Morera
Passeig de Gracia, 35, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08007
One of three buildings on the Illa de la Discordia (Block of Discord) on Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Lleó i Morera stands beside Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s Casa Amatller. Along with a distinctive ornamental façade, Casa Lleó i Morera has exquisite stained-glass windows and sculptures by Eusebi Arnau. Please note: Casa Lleó i Morera is currently closed to the public, but you can still take a virtual video tour of the building.
The Basics
Many guided tours of Barcelona pass by the building en route to Gaudí’s more famous structures, but only a few take visitors inside. If you’re interested in the city’s architecture, join a private tour of Barcelona’s modernist houses, and you’ll typically see the Casa Lleó i Morera’s spectacular interiors, including colorful mosaics by artists like Mario Maragliano and Lluís Bru i Salelles, plus furnishings handcrafted by cabinetmaker Gaspar Homar.
Things to Know Before You Go
Casa Lleó i Morera is a must-see for architecture buffs and those interested in the modernism movement.
Visitors can only enter the building as part of an organized tour, which must be arranged in advance; there is no ticket office at the house.
Guided tours of the interior last about 55 minutes.
When to Get There
Though Casa Lleó i Morera doesn’t command the crowds that Gaudí’s buildings do, it can still get busy during peak season in the summer. Plan to visit on a weekday morning, and remember to book your tour ahead of time.
The Modernist Architecture of Lluís Domènech i Montaner
Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the man behind some of Barcelona’s most impressive modernist architecture, was born in Barcelona. Though he got his start in physics and natural sciences, he made the switch to architecture and quickly became a major player in the Catalan Modernisme movement. Two of his buildings, the Hospital de Sant Pau and Palau de la Música Catalana, together make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
