Cathedral of St. Lawrence (Trogir Cathedral)
Trg Ivana Pavla II, Trogir, Croatia, 21220
Standing proudly over the historic buildings and homes of Trogir, the Cathedral of St. Lawrence is one of the main landmarks of the UNESCO-listed Croatian town. Its square tower offers complete panoramic views, while down at ground level, the cathedral is intricately detailed, especially around its main entrance and within the Renaissance-style Chapel of St. John.
The basics
Some aspects of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, from its Romanesque and Gothic architecture to its ornate western entrance, can be admired without setting foot inside. But to climb the bell tower or visit the Museum of Sacred Art, you’ll need to pay to enter the cathedral.
How long you spend visiting will depend on your interest and the line for the tower, but few visitors need more than 1 hour here. Most tours of Trogir will bring you to the cathedral as they explore the historical center of town, but to go inside, you’ll most likely need to come back on your own.
Things to know before you go
You can only pay for admission to the cathedral in person with cash.
Access to the top of the cathedral’s tower is by a steep and narrow spiral staircase.
Avoid visiting the tower on the hour, as the bells at the top are very loud when you’re standing next to them.
Remember to dress conservatively, including covering your shoulders, as the cathedral does enforce this rule.
How to get there
The Cathedral of St. Lawrence is found on the eastern side of Trogir Old Town, a short walk from the bridge leading to the island. If you’re coming to Trogir by car, park at one of the parking lots by the water outside the old town and walk over, since you won’t be able to use the car to explore the area. Visitors can easily reach Trogir from Split with a 40-minute bus ride.
When to get there
Opening hours for the Cathedral of St. Lawrence in Trogir change throughout the year, but the site is generally open on weekdays and, in some months, on Sundays. Trogir tends to get busiest during the middle of the day, so you might consider visiting first thing in the morning, especially if you wish to climb the tower without crowds slowing you down.
The Chapel of St. John
Much of the focus for visitors to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence is on the bell tower and entrance. But inside, the highlight is the Chapel of St. John. Sitting on the north side of the building, the chapel features sculptures surrounding an altar and tomb, as well as a finely carved ceiling. The chapel’s Renaissance style distinguishes it from the Romanesque and Gothic architecture of the rest of the cathedral.
