Cathedral of St. Stephen (Hvar Cathedral)
Trg Sv. Stjepana, Hvar, Dalmatia, 21450
There’s no better place to take in the essence of Hvar than in its main plaza while admiring the Cathedral of St. Stephen (also known as the Hvar Cathedral). Set upon a backdrop of green hillside, the church you see today was built between the 16th and 17th centuries, with elements of an even older church still preserved inside. The exterior is complete with a scalloped rooftop and a four-story bell tower that looms over the plaza.
The basics
Though the cathedral boasts a relatively humble interior, it is noted for its attractive altars, late Renaissance paintings, and 15th-century wooden choir stalls. For most, though, it’s the exterior that really leaves the biggest impression, with its scalloped rooftop and four-story, 17th-century bell tower that both grandly watch over the expansive limestone plaza that rolls out to the Adriatic Sea.
Hvar Cathedral’s central location means it’s often featured on Hvar walking tours. After admiring the buildings, check out other city sights, including the hilltop fortress and the Arsenal, a naval building-turned-theater.
Things to know before you go
Opening hours of the cathedral can vary, but it’s generally open in the morning until midday and then again in the afternoon.
There is a charge to enter the cathedral for visitors during the day; however, no admission is required if you attend a service.
Note that women may be expected to cover up their shoulders in order to enter the cathedral.
Avoid other revealing clothing (like shorts and tank tops), and remove hats and sunglasses before entering.
How to get there
Take a ferry or catamaran from Split or Dubrovnik to Hvar Island (bonus: the coastal views are amazing). There are even ferries that depart from Italy during peak season. From the port, enjoy a leisurely walk through the island’s charming and quaint streets to reach the cathedral’s entrance.
When to get there
Tourists flock to Hvar in droves during the summer months; so consider visiting during the quieter spring or fall seasons for a more intimate experience. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but the cooler temperatures will allow you to fully appreciate the cathedral’s stunning Baroque interior without facing the sweltering heat.
Best features of the interior
While the cathedral’s striking exterior facade and impressive bell tower are its most notable features, visitors should set aside some time to view the interior. You’ll find stone reliefs of saints near the rear of the nave, as well as carved 15th-century choir stalls and Renaissance paintings from some of the Venetian masters.
