Child Eater Fountain (Kindlifresserbrunnen)

Built in the 16th century by Hans Gieng, the Kindlifresserbrunnen is a public fountain and statue in Bern’s Kornhausplatz. Called the “Ogre” or “Child Eater Fountain,” it depicts a monster consuming young children—some of whom attempt to escape while others are contained in a sack at the monster’s feet. There are different theories about the macabre subject matter, and it’s a point of curiosity for lots of travelers in Bern.

How to get there
The Child Eater Fountain is located in Bern’s historical center, in Kornhausplatz. You can take the tram or bus to the Zytglogge stop, or set the Kornhauskeller Restaurant & Bar as your waypoint; the fountain is right outside.
When to get there
The public square is always open, so you can visit the Kindlifresserbrunnen anytime. Since the Kornhauskeller restaurant nearby is popular, expect even larger crowds between late morning and the evening. Visiting before 9am or after 9pm should thin the crowd enough for you to get a nice photo.
