Church of St. Charles (Karlskirche)
Kreuzherrengasse 1, Vienna, Vienna, 1040
An elegant dome and slender columns hint at the rich interior of the Church of St. Charles (Karlskirche), with large windows illuminating its marble surfaces and gilded details. The baroque masterpiece was built to celebrate the end of a devastating plague, and its treasures include an elaborate pulpit, religious paintings, and sculptures.
The basics
Since the Church of St. Charles is among Vienna’s top landmarks, it’s included on many guided tours of the city—with either an interior visit or a stroll past the photogenic exterior. To hear the church’s acoustics in action, it’s also possible to book tickets for a concert there; regular performances feature works by Vivaldi and Mozart, composers with deep ties to Vienna. Tickets to see the church alone can be purchased on-site, and Vienna City Card–holders get discounted admission.
Things to know before you go
- This is a must-see for art- and architecture-lovers.
- Entrance fees include access to a 360-degree observation platform that offers clear views of the frescoes.
- Children 10 and under enter free, and groups of six or more people can get discounted admission.
How to get there
Located at 1 Kreuzherrengasse in central Vienna, the Church of St. Charles is easily reached by underground, tram, bus, or taxi. The closest underground station is Karlsplatz, on the U1, U2, and U4 lines. By tram, take the 1, 62, or WLB to Resselgasse or the D to Gusshausstrasse, or you can take the N62 or N66 bus to the nearby Resselgasse stop.
When to get there
Even if there are no lines outside, visitors pile up while waiting to take the elevator to the church’s viewing platform. To avoid delays, showing up first thing in the morning is a good strategy. And while visiting hours extend after sunset, it’s worth arriving during daylight for the full effect of the windows, since natural light shows the frescoes and sculptures at their best.
Attending a concert at the church
Regular performances of classical music turn this landmark church into a stage for musicians, who generally use period instruments for the occasions. Tickets are divided into Category I, Category II, and Category III; the most expensive seats are set closest to the stage. While Category II and Category III are a pretty similar experience, Category I seats earn their premium prices with better views of the musicians. Since evening temperatures in the church can be cool, bring a warm layer to wear during the concert.
