Clermont State Historic Site
1 Clermont Ave., Germantown, NY, 12526
Formerly home to seven generations of New York’s influential Livingston family, the Clermont State Historic Site is one of the grandest historic estates along the Hudson River. A National Historic Landmark since 1973, the manor dates back to the 1730s, and its exhibitions tell the stories of the enslaved and Indigenous people, and tenant farmers, who also lived and worked here.
The basics
For visitors interested in the region’s history, few landmarks rival the Clermont State Historic Site in upstate New York. The estate encapsulates centuries of American politics, intrigue, and change (and was even burned down by British troops in 1777). You can see the manor’s heritage furnishings and learn about its residents on a guided tour, and also explore the 500-acre (200-hectare) grounds, which offer spectacular views overlooking the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. In addition to its walled garden and lilac walk, the estate features a range of wooded walking trails, and is known for its exceptional bird-watching.
Things to know before you go
Tickets are purchased on-site; children under 12 visit for free, and seniors and students receive discounted admission.
There is a picnic area on the grounds, so you’re welcome to bring a packed lunch with you.
Admission to the Clermont State Historic Site is included with the Empire Pass Card.
How to get there
The Clermont State Historic Site is located at 1 Clermont Avenue in Germantown, New York, about 1 hour south of Albany via I-87 S, and 2 hours north of New York City via I-87 N. Paid parking is offered on-site. If taking the train, the nearest stop on Amtrak’s Empire Service is Hudson, about 16 miles (26 kilometers) upriver.
When to get there
The estate’s gardens and grounds, as well as its on-site visitor center, are open year-round. The grounds are accessible daily from early morning until sunset, while the visitor center is open Thursday–Sunday from morning until late afternoon. Tours are also offered year-round Thursday–Sunday, every hour on the hour from late morning to late afternoon.
Hudson River National Landmark District
The Hudson River Valley isn’t just one of New York State’s most scenic corners—it’s also home to the Hudson River National Landmark District, which encompasses a number of historic homes and estates. In addition to the Clermont State Historic Site, you can seek out National Historic Landmarks like the Vanderbilt Mansion and Val-Kill (the former home of Eleanor Roosevelt).
