POINT OF INTEREST

Comedy Cellar

New York City, NY

Not just one of the most popular comedy clubs in NYC but in the whole country, the Comedy Cellar is a Greenwich Village staple. The storied venue, which has hosted stand-up for more than 40 years, attracts top-tier comics as well as up-and-comers—and the shows usually sell out.

The basics

There are few better places to head for a night of laughs in Manhattan than the Comedy Cellar. The venue has hosted comedy stars including Jon Stewart, Ali Wong, and Sarah Silverman, and is the best place in town to catch new and established talents. Be sure to book your tickets well in advance; note that prices are lowest on Mondays and Tuesdays and tend to peak on Fridays, Saturdays, and holidays.

The club also operates sister venues beyond its main Macdougal Street location. You can head to the Fat Black Pussycat or the Village Underground, both of which are right around the corner on West 3rd Street, to catch more comedy.

Things to know before you go

  • The Comedy Cellar has a 2-drink or -snack minimum for all visitors.
  • Most shows are for ages 21 and up, though 18–20-year-olds who are attending with a parent can write in for permission.
  • All shows at the Comedy Cellar are phone-free; you’ll need to check in your device upon arrival.
  • Note that the club cannot accommodate parties over eight people.

How to get there

The Comedy Cellar is on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, near Washington Square Park. To get there via public transportation, take the A, C, E, B, D, F, or M train to West 4th St-Washington Square, just a few blocks away. Taxis and rideshare services make getting there easy, too.

When to get there

The Comedy Cellar is open daily. Its lineups and showtimes vary depending on the day of the week—be sure to check the schedule in advance, but note that last-minute lineup changes can occur. To guarantee your place, it’s best to book early; weekends and holidays are an especially popular time to visit.

Top Manhattan comedy clubs

New York City is a comedy goldmine, and in addition to the Comedy Cellar (plus its sister venues) there are plenty of other clubs worth seeking out. A few highlights include Caveat on the Lower East Side, a great place for improv; the Gotham Comedy Club (a favorite of Jerry Seinfeld); and the New York Comedy Club, which hosts shows nightly at its two locations.
