Craft Contemporary

5814 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90036

Formerly known as the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Craft Contemporary is an art museum dedicated to showcasing contemporary craft and design—and among the only museums of its kind in the western US. In addition to featuring cutting-edge exhibits of hand-crafted objects from all over the world—from pottery to woodworking and large-scale installations—the museum hosts craft-making workshops multiple times per week.

The basics

The museum lies on Museum Row on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile neighborhood, home to some of the most essential museums in Los Angeles. It's easy to visit Craft Contemporary and multiple neighborhood museums in a single day as they are all within walking distance of each other—Hollywood and Beverly are nearby but require driving. Guests can also join museum guides on group tours or schedule self-guided group tours to explore the galleries independently.

Things to know before you go

  • For in-person tours, groups of more than 10 must make reservations with three weeks' notice.

  • General admission is US$9; students, teachers, and seniors receive discounts; children 10 and under enter for free.

  • The Craft Contemporary Shop sells hand-made artisan objects on the museum's first floor.

  • The free TeenTix LA pass grants teens admission for US$5.

  • There are public restrooms in the museum and near the La Brea Tar Pit Pond on Curson Avenue.

How to get there

The museum is on Wilshire Boulevard in the Museum Mile neighborhood, near Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It's about 30 minutes from Downtown Los Angeles by car. If you're driving, take Interstate 10, also called the Santa Monica Highway, to La Brea and head north along Olympic Boulevard to Wilshire Boulevard. On public transportation, the museum is along the #20 bus route; the nearest metro stop is Wilshire/Wilson Station along the D-Line.

When to get there

The museum is open Tuesday–Sunday from 11am to 5pm, and stays open until 8pm on the first Thursday of every month. On Sundays, the museum offers sliding-scale admission. Craft workshops are usually on weekend afternoons; visit the museum website for a schedule of museum classes, lectures, and events. In-person group tours are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with limited availability on weekends.

Los Angeles’ Museum Mile

Craft Contemporary lies in the heart of Museum Mile, a neighborhood along a stretch of Wilshire Boulevard home to four Los Angeles Museums. The La Brea Tar Pits Pond and Museum lie across Wilshire—as do the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The Petersen Automotive Museum, Pavilion for Japanese Art, and B. Gerald Cantor Sculpture Garden are within walking distance of these major museums.
