Criterion Theater

Bar Harbor, ME

Built in 1932, Bar Harbor’s Criterion Theater offers a rare look at the city’s post–Gilded Age past. An intimate Art Deco performance space, the Criterion has somehow survived the eras, still putting on year-round concerts, performances, movies, and more. For a slice of Bar Harbor history and entertainment, this spot packs a 1-2 punch.

The basics

In the 1930s, Bar Harbor was a popular getaway for the theater-going elite, and the Criterion Theatre came to be—it’s one of only two Art Deco theaters in all of Maine. Holding almost 900 patrons, it’s a rare Art Deco spot that would be quite modest if it weren’t for the intricate detailing, like the neon marquee, patterned ceiling, and hand-cut French glass chandelier.

To the delight of architecture buffs, the theater is totally, completely original. Come here to catch a movie, a play, a concert, a talk, or whatever’s on during your visit—and leave time to take in the interior itself.

Things to know before you go

  • Both the balcony and orchestra sections are accessible to wheelchairs.
  • The theater has a generous concession stand (hello, Maine popcorn with real butter), including beer and wine.
  • Tickets can be bought online or at the box office one hour prior to showtime.
  • Restrooms can be found on both the main floor and balcony levels.

How to get there

The Criterion Theatre is right in the center of town, just one block from the popular Village Green. If you’re ever in downtown Bar Harbor—and the odds are good—you’re within walking distance of the Criterion. Otherwise, nab a taxi or a rideshare. If you drive, be aware that street parking is limited.

When to get there

Do your best to get there roughly 30 minutes before showtime—that’ll be enough time to check out the theater, marvel at the details, grab a good seat, get a snack at concessions, hit the restroom, and get comfortable before the show. If you don’t yet have tickets, aim for 5–10 minutes earlier.

The best seats in the house

Some patrons of the Criterion maintain that the balcony is the theater’s best seating; from there, you get a great view, plus you’re close to the bar and restrooms. The floor level puts you closer to the action, of course—so it’s up to you. For what it’s worth, there’s no bad seat in the house.
