POINT OF INTEREST

Crystal Cove State Park

Laguna Beach, CA

Beachfront coves, coastal cliffs, and the Crystal Cove Historic District make up Crystal Cove State Park, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. Because of its natural beauty and sandy beach, many visitors to the Newport Beach area make a special trip to this state park. Plus, Crystal Cove is known for the biodiversity of its kelp forest.

The basics

Some Orange County day trips stop at Crystal Cove State Park, but visitors typically explore Crystal Cove independently. With tide pools, beaches, food options, and outdoor activities such as hiking and horseback riding, it’s best to buy a day pass for the park. Some visitors even stay overnight or longer by pre-booking a campsite, RV site, or a cabin on the beach.

Things to know before you go

  • There is onsite parking, but it costs to park. Day use to the state park will cost you US$15USD to park per vehicle and US$20 during the summer or holidays. If you’re staying in one of the beach cottages, your parking will be validated.)

  • The Beachcomber Café in the Crystal Cove Historic District is worth grabbing a meal at. Built inside an old cottage, the restaurant offers stunning views over the Pacific Ocean.

  • Alcohol isn’t allowed except in booked overnight areas or at the restaurant.

How to get there

The best and easiest way to get to Crystal Cove State Park in California is to drive or take a rideshare service as the park is off the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). There is easy access to the park from I-5, 405, and 73, but the Pacific Coast Highway passes right through it.

When to get there

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, then a weekday visit that isn’t in the summertime is best. Also, morning visits help avoid the crowds. If you’re looking to enjoy seeing the tide pools at low tide, then a spring morning is best to go to Crystal Cove State Park.

Follow the PCH to the Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier is a must when visiting Southern California and it’s only about an hour’s drive from Crystal Cove State Park. It’s straight off the Pacific Coast Highway, making it easy to find once you leave the state park. Plus, with fun attractions, good food, an exciting atmosphere, and a marine education center, you’ll want to spend a day, if not more, there.
