Cubbyhole
New York City, NY
Rainbow flags, painted flower stencils, and an eclectic montage of paper lanterns welcome you to the Cubbyhole, one of just a handful of lesbian bars left in New York City. Starting life as DT’s Fat Cat in 1987, it changed into the Cubbyhole in 1994, continuing to be a safe haven for LGBTQ+ folks and anyone else who wants to swing by.
The basics
LGBTQ+ travelers and like-minded pals won’t want to miss a drink or two at this cute and quirky bar. The Cubbyhole is something of a local institution and is always packed, so pull up a vinyl barstool, order a Purple Unicorn cocktail, and try not to get your hair caught in the dangling ceiling decorations. If you want to learn more about the city’s LGBTQ+ culture, you could also take a walking or cycling tour of Greenwich Village.
Things to know before you go
- While the Cubbyhole is most famous for being a lesbian and gay bar, everyone is welcome there.
- Bring some bills in your wallet, as the bar is cash-only.
- The bar serves wine, beer, cocktails, and a small selection of non-alcoholic drinks.
How to get there
The Cubbyhole is on the corner of West 12th Street and West 4th Street in the West Village (which has several diagonal streets). To get there, take the A, C, E, or L train to 14th Street/8th Avenue or hop in a taxi.
When to get there
The bar is open every evening, keeping longer hours on the weekends. There’s a daily happy hour as well, so head over on the early side for the best drink deals.
Where to go in the West Village
The bohemian West Village hasn’t lost its cool, and its cobbled streets and historic townhouses are full of charm. Take a stroll through Washington Square Park, visit the poignant Stonewall Monument, browse the shops on Bleecker Street, and pass by Carrie’s apartment from Sex and the City. At night, you can catch some live jazz at the Village Vanguard (reserve your tickets in advance), book a table at Via Carota, or go for cocktails at Katana Kitten.
