Deschutes River Trail

Bend, OR

More than 12 miles (20 kilometers) of trails wind along the Deschutes River in Bend, passing some of the most scenic riverside areas of the Pacific Northwest. Popular with hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers, the trail meanders through the heart of Bend, while other unconnected parts weave into ponderosa pine forests and—unexpectedly—lava zones.

The basics

The Bend portion of the trail runs roughly from a footbridge south of the Old Mill District north to the Riley Ranch Nature Reserve. Within Bend, you can easily hit the trail at Farewell Bend Park and hike north along the river's south bank to Drake Park near downtown. Most of the trail is flat and easy, while more challenging hikes begin south of the town, including a second, unconnected portion closer to Sunriver with more remote hiking. Most travelers visit independently, although there are tours available, including exploring on horseback.

Things to know before you go

  • The trail varies in difficulty; some sections are flat and easy, while others are more rugged and challenging.
  • Mosquitoes can be brutal near the water—pack bug spray.
  • If you lose your bearings on more remote parts of the trails, simply stay near the river.
  • Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash.
  • E-bikes are not allowed on the trails.

How to get there

The Deschutes River Trail can easily be accessed from various points in Bend, roughly from the Old Mills District north to the Riley River Nature Reserve. One popular starting point is at the Old Mill District, where parking is readily available. The trail is also accessible from several parks along the river, including Farewell Bend Park and Riverbend Park. Sunriver is about 17 miles (27 kilometers) south of Bend along US Route 97.

When to visit

The trail is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring, summer, and early fall, when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most vibrant. Winter visits can be beautiful as well, especially during low-snow periods. Keep in mind that the trail is very popular and becomes crowded with hikers and raft tours during summer.

How to hike the remote parts of the Deschutes River Trail

The second Deschutes River Trail near Sunriver—an unconnected part of the same trail—offers a more secluded experience popular with seasoned hikers and mountain bikers. This 17-mile loop (27 miles) features lava flows, old-growth pine forests, and dramatic rapids, including Big Eddy, Dillon Falls, Benham Falls, and Lava Falls. You can access it directly from the town of Sunriver.
