Detroit Opera House
1526 Broadway St, Detroit, MI, 48226
The Detroit Opera House (renamed from the Michigan Opera Theatre in 2022) is a historic venue showcasing productions ranging from classics such as La Traviata to new works such as The Central Park Five. The opera and dance seasons each offer a range of performances for the avid theatergoer and casual fan alike.
The basics
The opera house—which began as a movie palace in the 1920s—offers much to see even when the stage is empty. You could visit during a guided walking tour, or book a private tour of the venue. Private tours last 90 minutes, though there’s also a tour available that lasts just under an hour. You can also opt for the full experience of seeing an opera or dance performance—check the theater’s website for the schedule and to purchase tickets.
Things to know before you go
Pre-visit stories, sensory bags, and wheelchair rentals are just a few of the accessible features. Call the ticket office to purchase accessible seating.
There is no dress code for visiting or attending a performance at the Detroit Opera House.

How to get there
The Detroit Opera House is in downtown Detroit. Take the Detroit People Mover to the Broadway or Grand Circus Park stop; on the QLine, the Grand Circus tram stop is also nearby. The opera has a dedicated parking center if you’re driving, though rideshares and taxis are also easy to use in the city.
When to get there
Doors to the Detroit Opera House typically open around 90 minutes prior to the start of a performance. You might not need that much time, but give yourself a buffer between 20 and 30 minutes. If you arrive after the performance starts, you may be seated in an alternate location.
