Things to know before you go
The site has walkways, as well as a bridge that spans two boulders.
There are slip-resistant steps that provide a safe walking surface throughout the year, and there’s an ADA–compliant trail.
Small-group ghost tours allow you to explore Gettysburg after dark and learn about the area’s macabre happenings, including Civil War events. Devil’s Den is considered to be one of the most haunted locations on the battlefield.
How to get there
Devil’s Den, within Gettysburg National Military Park, is about a 10-minute drive from the center of Gettysburg. Regional buses travel to Gettysburg, where you can then take local transportation or drive to the park. From Washington DC, it’s about a 90-minute drive, and from Philadelphia, it’s around 2.5 hours. Guided tours from DC also typically include round-trip transportation.
When to get there
The best time to visit is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild, making it ideal for exploring the rocky terrain and surrounding battlefield. Fall also offers beautiful foliage. Historical reenactments and special events often take place around the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in early July.
Little Round Top
One of the main stops on battlefield tours, Little Round Top, next to Devil’s Den, was a strategic position for the Union army during the Civil War, and today serves as a popular landmark. Here, visitors can travel along multiple trailheads that line the slope of the rocky hill.
