POINT OF INTEREST

Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90012

The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion is the leading and largest music hall of the Los Angeles Music Center and hosts some of the best performances in southern California. Once the setting of the Academy Awards, the hall is a top Los Angeles cultural landmark and currently serves as the home of the LA Opera and Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center.

The basics

The pavilion has one of the largest stages in the US. It is popular with locals and visitors looking to catch first-rate musical performances: operas, dance, classical concerts, etc. An icon of midcentury architecture designed for pitch-perfect acoustics, the building is an attraction in its own right. Cultural sightseeing tours often stop to admire the structure and interiors, typically after checking out the more modern Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street.

Things to know before you go

  • The interiors are full of mosaics, artworks, and hand-cut chandeliers—look around if you’re seeing a show.

  • Rental binoculars are available for a nominal fee for most shows.

  • Assisted listening devices are available for free.

  • Wheelchair transportation is available but must be arranged 24 hours before your performance.

  • Children under 9 cannot attend an opera.

How to get there

The music hall is part of The Music Center of Los Angeles County in downtown Los Angeles. Drivers should aim for downtown and park in the Music Center Garage or at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Metro lines B and D stop at Civic Center/Grand Park Station across the street, with free transfers during weekend matinee performances.

When to get there

Performances are typically held once a day from Thursday to Sunday. Opera season, typically from February to June and September to December, is a great time to visit. Annual Christmas Eve holidays celebrations include multiple dance and music performances of more than three hours—and are free to view if you can snag a spot.

What’s on around the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

In addition to being part of the Music Center of Los Angeles County, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Hall is within walking distance of many downtown attractions. The Walt Disney Concert Hall lies across the street in front of the Broad Museum and the LA Museum of Contemporary Art. The contemporary Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Chinese American Museum, and Japanese American National Museum are also nearby—make time to visit at least one of these.
