Earthquake Park
5101 Point Woronzof Road, Anchorage, AK, 99502
In 1964, an entire neighborhood of Anchorage slid into the ocean during what remains the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history. Measuring 9.2 on the Richter scale, this tragic event is commemorated in Earthquake Park, where you can still see evidence of the devastating earthquake that permanently altered the Anchorage landscape.
The basics
To understand the magnitude of the Great Alaskan Earthquake, a trip to Earthquake Park is a must. An interpretive trail winds through the park with signs pointing out the effects of the earthquake, as well as Anchorage's history before and after the quake. A visit to Earthquake Park is the highlight of the Anchorage Trolley Tour, and a visit to the park is included in most city sightseeing tours.
Things to know before you go
Earthquake Park is a must-see for first-time visitors to Anchorage.
Bring plenty of layers—the wind off the water can get quite blustery.
Don’t forget bug spray during the summer months.
The park has both paved and dirt trails, providing options for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
Earthquake Park is west of downtown Anchorage, near Lake Hood and the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Parking is available just off of West Northern Lights Boulevard, and the park is also easily reached by bike via the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.
When to get there
Earthquake Park is worth a visit any time of year. Expect mosquitos during the summer months, and enjoy solitude and the occasional moose sighting during the winter months. The park is also a great place to catch the sunset and take in panoramic views of downtown Anchorage and the surrounding mountains.
Cycling the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail
Bike rental is inexpensive and readily available in downtown Anchorage; following the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail is a great way to arrive at Earthquake Park. The paved path runs 11 miles (18 kilometers) from downtown Anchorage, passing by much of the worst damage from the 1964 quake. The trail hugs the coast and offers great views of the Chugach Mountains, tidal inlets, and the city skyline.
