East River Esplanade
New York City, NY
Manhattan’s famous green spaces, like Central Park, often get all the attention from those seeking the great outdoors in NYC. But the East River Esplanade, a tree-lined pathway with river views, provides a scenic alternative. Locals come here to walk their dogs, go for a walk or a run, or kick back on one of the shaded benches, and also attend events here including live music, birding tours, and fishing classes.
The basics
The East River Esplanade is in midtown Manhattan, running along the FDR Drive from East 36th Street to East 41st Street. It’s part of the larger East River Greenway, which runs, mostly continuously, from the southern tip of Manhattan up to 125th Street in East Harlem. Most people spend an hour or two here strolling along the waterfront or relaxing with a picnic. Don’t miss the two-block segment between East 36th Street and East 38th Street, which was designed by landscape architect Thomas Balsley.
Things to know before you go
- The East River Esplanade is great for families seeking open spaces and visitors looking to exercise outside.
- The esplanade is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, though some imperfect cobbles are obstacles to avoid.
- Entry is free.
How to get there
To reach the East River Esplanade, use the pedestrian underpass beneath the FDR Drive at 37th Street. Most visitors walk or bike there; the nearest subway is the 6 train to 33rd Street. The area, home to hospitals and the United Nations, has some indoor parking options, though gridlock traffic can be an issue here, so public transit is your best bet.
When to get there
The esplanade is open throughout the year, providing an all-season escape. The morning hours are an especially nice time to visit, and even catch the sunrise in the east. Springtime, with its colorful flowers, is also a great time to come for a stroll.
Friends of the East River Esplanade
Before a visit, check out the website of the Friends of the East River Esplanade, a community group that’s dedicated to the restoration of the entire East River Greenway. The site has a calendar of events at the esplanade, including free live music, gardening classes, waterfront tours, yoga classes, and more.
