Erie Zoo
423 W 38th St, Erie, PA, 16508
The Erie Zoo, which recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, is a welcoming attraction devoted to wildlife and conservation that’s grown to house over 400 animals. When you’re not listening to lion roars or spotting snakes slithering, you’ll notice a comparable diversity of flora throughout the site’s botanical gardens.
The basics
The zoo makes for an appealing stop alongside other local sights, such as the nearby Erie Maritime Museum. Its seven sections are easy to navigate thanks to interconnected pathways, and children will especially enjoy features like the carousel, playground, adventure center, and Safariland train. Some sections are interactive, including the Australian Walkabout, where the eastern gray kangaroo roams freely alongside visitors.
Things to know before you go
Pack a light appetite as only three snack concessions are available.
There’s a gift shop at the zoo, plus some souvenirs are available online.
Stroller, wheelchair, and ScooterPal rentals are available.
How to get there
The Erie Zoo is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from the Lake Erie waterfront. Most visitors will arrive from Interstate 90 via Exit 27; it’s the most direct driving route and on-site parking is free. The number 15 bus has a stop just beyond the parking lot.
When to get there
The zoo’s normal operating season is typically March–November from morning to late afternoon/early evening. Most visitors will spend 1–2 hours at this compact zoo and botanical garden, though you could easily spend more time wandering the gardens, riding the attractions, or visiting on a special event day like ZooBoo in October.
Nature attractions with wildlife near Lake Erie
Only 6 miles (10 kilometers) away from the Erie Zoo is Asbury Woods, a nature preserve with 5 miles (8 kilometers) of hiking trails, a nature center, and more gardens to explore, open year-round. There’s a variety of self-guided activities and scheduled programs available, and visitors sometimes spot wildlife in the old growth forest.
