Evergreen Cemetery

Gettysburg, PA, 17325

Established in 1854, Gettysburg’s Evergreen Cemetery is a historic burial ground. Here, you can see the graves of notable figures, including Jennie Wade, the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg, and the site’s original gatehouse, which still houses the cemetery’s caretaker. The cemetery is also adjacent to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.

The basics

Explore the grounds of the Evergreen Cemetery on a self-guided walking tour, with interpretive signs providing historical context. Maps are often available at the entrance and highlight a number of the graves. Another landmark you’ll see is the cemetery’s distinctive gatehouse, which was designed to represent the gates of heaven. Adjacent to the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the site offers an opportunity to reflect and gain a somber perspective of the Civil War.

Things to know before you go

  • To avoid crowds, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

  • There is uneven terrain in some areas of the cemetery, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

  • Of interest to some visitors, lots are still available for purchase at the cemetery, including a section where veterans can be buried with their family members.

How to get there

By car, you can reach Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg via US Route 15. There’s parking available near the entrance. From downtown Gettysburg or the National Cemetery, you can easily get to the site along Baltimore Street; from downtown, it’s about a 20-minute walk and from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address Memorial in the National Cemetery, it’s about a 10-minute walk.

When to get there

The cemetery is open from dawn to dusk; it may close due to unfavorable weather conditions. Overall, the best time to visit is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild and the landmarks in Gettysburg are less crowded than during the summer.

Gettysburg National Cemetery

More than 3,500 US soldiers who were killed at Gettysburg are buried here. It was at the 1863 dedication of the site, as Soldiers' National Cemetery, that President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address. Graves of veterans from other wars including Vietnam are also found here.
