POINT OF INTEREST

Fairyland Point

Bryce Canyon National Park, UT

Looking out over Fairyland Canyon, Fairyland Point is a lovely place to take in park views—or to start a hike into Bryce Canyon National Park. It's also the northernmost overlook in the park, providing lots of visitors with some of their first glimpses of Bryce’s characteristic hoodoos.

The basics

There are lots of ways to visit Fairyland Point—and Bryce Canyon—either independently or as part of a tour. Plenty of small-group day tours from Las Vegas visit Bryce Canyon National Park, making it possible to visit in one day without having to rent a car. Multi-night tours from Vegas that visit all of Utah’s “Mighty 5” national parks are another great option.

If you have a car and are visiting independently, you can still get the tour experience by downloading an app-based audio driving tour, many of which include other Utah National Parks. Private guided hikes are another great way to explore.

Things to know before you go

  • Fairyland Point is a must for photographers looking to take epic landscape pictures of the park.

  • Carry tons of water and wear sun protection and solid footwear if you decide to hike the Fairyland Loop Trail.

  • Fairyland Point is wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly, and while the viewpoint area isn't paved, it is made of compacted earth that's easy to cross.

How to get there

If you’re entering Bryce Canyon National Park via the north entrance, you can reach Fairyland Point by heading south to Fairyland Spur Road and then turning left. If you’re coming from the visitor center, head north and then turn right. You'll need to either drive to Fairyland Point or hike in from elsewhere in the park via the Rim Trail, as the park's shuttle doesn't stop here.

When to get there

You can visit Fairyland Point at any time of the day, but if you plan to do the 8-mile (13-kilometer) Fairyland Loop trail, it's best to arrive early in the morning (especially if you come during the hot summer season). Note that the road to the viewpoint closes during the snowy winter season, and can only be accessed by cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in.

Hiking the Fairyland Loop Trail

If you want to get up to some of the hoodoos in Fairyland Canyon, consider a hike along the Fairyland Loop Trail, an 8-mile (13-kilometer) strenuous trek with an elevation gain of about 1,900 feet (580 meters). The hike takes around four to five hours, and its length and difficulty make it a great option for experienced hikers who want to beat the crowds, whether independently or with a guide.
