Fox River State Trail
Green Bay & Door County, WI
Running along a former rail corridor, the scenic Fox River State Trail skirts the banks of Wisconsin’s Fox River from downtown Green Bay, running for 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest into the rural hills. A popular route for walkers and cyclists, this partially paved trail is steeped in history, beginning with Native Americans who used area footpaths to travel between villages.
The basics
This panoramic trail offers an ideal break from sightseeing in Green Bay, and a stroll or cycle along the Fox River State Trail is easy to pair with a guided city tour, whether by walking, Segway, or e-scooter. Pick up the trail directly from downtown Green Bay and cover the level route along the banks of the Fox River to the city limits and beyond. The first stretch of the trail is paved, offering easy exploration on foot or wheels, while the final stretch is packed, crushed limestone and ideal for horseback riding.
Things to know before you go
- You can walk along the Fox River State Trail for free, but you must purchase a US$5 day pass to cycle, in-line skate, skateboard, or horseback ride on the trail.
- Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail, making it particularly safe for families.
- There are restrooms, benches, a fitness course, and gazebos along the route.
- The trail follows a former rail corridor, so it is flat and easy to manage with a wheelchair.
How to get there
Fox River State Trail begins at the CityDeck riverfront promenade on North Washington Street in downtown Green Bay. City buses 4 and 29 stop at the Washington stop just a block away, while buses 3 and 31 stop at the Main & Adams stop about two blocks away.
When to get there
The trail is open from dawn to dusk all year round. There is little shelter from the elements along the route, so plan your walk or bike ride on a clear, mild day to enjoy the cityscape and countryside views. Conditions during the winter months can be challenging, so explore the trail from spring through fall.
