Freedom Plaza
1325 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington DC, Washington DC, USA, 20004
A block-long public plaza located on Pennsylvania Avenue (just a few blocks from the White House), Freedom Plaza is a popular Washington DC gathering place. Inscribed with urban planner Pierre Charles L’Enfant’s 1791 design for the city. It’s also engraved with quotes from famous figures and has a statue of soldier Casimir Pulaski.
The basics
Freedom Plaza was renamed in 1988 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. who wrote his “I Have a Dream” speech nearby. Its relief map of DC and quotes from luminaries like Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain, and Abraham Lincoln make it a popular stop for tourists and residents, who come to relax, and even skateboard. Thanks to its proximity to other major Washington DC sights, Freedom Plaza features on numerous sightseeing itineraries, from African-American history tours and e-bike tours to nighttime excursions.
Things to know before you go
Freedom Plaza is open to the public and always free to visit.
Though the plaza is elevated and generally accessed by several sets of stairs, ramps ensure it’s wheelchair-accessible.
Freedom Plaza is a popular gathering point during political protests; while most are peaceful, it may be best to avoid the area if large-scale demonstrations are taking place.
How to get there
Freedom Plaza is on Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th Street NW and 14th Street NW. It’s just a few blocks from two Metro stops, Federal Triangle and Metro Center, both of which are served by the Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines. The area is also frequented by numerous bus lines.
When to get there
Freedom Plaza is open to visitors day and night. Because it is exposed to the elements with very little coverage, it’s best to visit on a good weather day. If visiting in the summer, be sure to bring sunscreen and other protection, as the sun and heat can be fierce.
What to see nearby to Freedom Plaza
Located in the heart of Washington DC—near many of the capital’s most famous government buildings—Freedom Plaza is worth visiting as part of a monuments and landmarks tour of the city. Other nearby highlights include the White House, the National Mall, the Washington Monument, and several Smithsonian museums.
