Gapstow Bridge

New York City, NY

Gapstow Bridge spans The Pond in the heart of Central Park, and is one of New York’s most photogenic landmarks. Visitors may recognize it from its appearance in movies including Home Alone 2. This rustic stone bridge, with its graceful arch and serene surroundings, offers a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle as well as excellent views of the NYC skyline.

The basics

The current Gapstow Bridge was built in 1896 to replace an earlier metal version. Today it is one of 30 ornamental bridges and arches that are dotted around Central Park, and a key feature of the park’s walking paths. Guided walking and bike tours take visitors to Gapstow Bridge and allow time for photos of the NYC skyline, in between stops at other Central Park landmarks such as the cast iron Bow Bridge (the park’s largest bridge) and Turtle Pond.

Things to know before you go

  • The pedestrian path over the bridge is open to cyclists.
  • Most Central Park pedestrian paths are wheelchair accessible.
  • Watch out for slippery ice on the bridge during the winter months.
  • Central Park is free to enter.

How to get there

Gapstow Bridge is located in the southern section of NYC’s Central Park, near 62nd Street and 5th Avenue and a short stroll from the Central Park Zoo. The closest subway stations are 59th St–Columbus Circle (a 10-minute walk) and 5th Avenue–59th Street (a 5-minute walk).

When to get there

Central Park is open daily from early morning to late night. It’s a year-round attraction, but especially beautiful during the fall season, when the trees burst with colors, and on winter days when the bridge is dusted with snow. Aim to arrive early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds.

Central Park attractions

Gapstow Bridge's prime location makes it an easy stop during a day at Central Park. After taking in the views, you can head to the Central Park Zoo or go off the beaten path with a stroll through the nearby Hallett Nature Sanctuary. If you’re visiting in the winter, you’ll find the Wollman Rink just a couple of minutes’ walk from the bridge.
