Gershwin Theatre
222 W 51st St., Manhattan, New York City, NY, 10019
The Gershwin Theatre is located just off Broadway, in the heart of New York's Theater District. The art nouveau theater has a rich history of staging celebrated musical theater performances—fromSweeney Todd toWicked—and hosted Broadway's famous Tony Awards. Seeing a show at the Gershwin means experiencing a staple on the Broadway scene.
The Basics
Pass by the historic Gershwin Theatre on a neighborhood walking tour or private sightseeing tour, both of which are a great way to hear old Broadway legends and see the sights. To explore inside the theater, book tickets to a show. Most shows at the Gershwin are quite popular, and buying tickets in advance is recommended. Pick a show that works best for you—either a matinee or evening performance.
Things to Know Before You Go
Theater lovers shouldn't miss a show at the Gershwin.
Don't bring bags or luggage, since the theater doesn't allow them to be stored or checked.
Leave your camera at home, as no photography or recording is allowed in the theater.
For mid-show refreshments, find bars on the mezzanine and front orchestra levels.
How to Get There
The Gershwin is just steps from the subway. Take the 1 train to 50th Street Broadway, and walk west on 51st Street. You can also take the C or E trains to 50th Street.
When to Get There
Though you can pass by the Gershwin anytime, the best way to experience the theater is at a show. To attend a performance, make sure to arrive at least 20 minutes before the show starts. Since most shows are opening—and getting reviewed—between September and December, plan to book tickets outside of these peak months. July is a great month to see a Broadway show, since the Tony Awards are over by mid-June.
Exploring Midtown Manhattan
The Theater District is in Midtown Manhattan, home to countless must-see New York attractions. Within a few short blocks of the Gershwin, you find sights including the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center and the world-renowned Museum of Modern Art. If you can't find advance tickets to a show at the Gershwin, don't sweat it. The TKTS booth in Times Square offers discounted tickets to numerous shows, including same-day performances.
