Grand Central Market

317 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA, 90013

Los Angeles’ foodie haven, Grand Central Market, has been a mainstay on the LA culinary scene since 1917. The sprawling Beaux Arts-style market is a bustling place where dozens of food vendors serve dishes worldwide, from Berlin-style currywurst and Japanese bento boxes to Mexican tacos. It’s a microcosm of the city’s diversity.

The basics

The high-ceilinged historic building invites wandering between stalls (which are marked out by glowing neon lights) and soaking up the lively scene before deciding where you want to eat. As well as prepared dishes, visitors can purchase fresh produce, including fruits, vegetables, cheeses, chiles, and spices, to use at home. Guided tours of Downtown Los Angeles often include a visit to Grand Central Market and can help fill in some of its history.

Things to know before you go

  • There are a few tables and chairs where you can sit down, but most people take their food to go.
  • Grand Central Market is wheelchair accessible, including its bathrooms and parking garage.
  • Expect lines at some more popular stalls, such as Eggslut, during breakfast and lunch hours.

How to get there

The LA Metro Red and Purple lines stop at Pershing Square Station, just one block from Grand Central Market. There are also several Metro Bus stops within a short strolling distance. You can find paid parking in the garage behind the market on South Hill Street if driving.

When to get there

Grand Central Market is open seven days a week, from early morning through late evening, but individual vendors’ hours vary, so check the market’s website for details before visiting. You’ll find the best dining options by visiting earlier in the day for breakfast or lunch. The market hosts regular events, so check the online calendar for upcoming things to do.

The Bradbury Building

Movie buffs will want to stop at the Bradbury Building, adjacent to Grand Central Market. This architectural landmark is a downtown gem known for its skylight atrium, ornate ironwork, and ubiquity in popular entertainment. Most famously, the building featured prominently in “Blade Runner.” Visitors are allowed inside, but only to the first floor.
