Grand Central Station
89 E 42nd St, Manhattan, New York City, NY, 10017
Located at the heart of Manhattan, Grand Central Station (also known as Grand Central Terminal) welcomes 750,000 people daily who come to marvel at its spectacular architecture and murals, grab a bite to eat, or simply catch a commuter train home.
The basics
Built in the early 1900s, Grand Central covers a massive 48 acres (19 hectares) and is full of architectural treasures such as opulent chandeliers and a “whispering gallery” with unique acoustic properties. People come and go through the station at all hours, making it one of the best spots in Manhattan for people-watching.
Grand Central Station tickets aren’t required to enter; however, you can purchase transit tickets or tickets for a guided tour. Learn all about the train station on the NYC: Official Grand Central Terminal Tour or an audio tour and discover hidden platforms and rooms, learn the meanings of the different murals, and peruse the terminal’s many eateries. City tours often stop by Grand Central Station en route to other New York City attractions such as Times Square or Central Park.
Things to know before you go
The station and its restrooms are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
Don’t miss the monumental ceiling mural of the night sky over the main concourse, which features 2,500 stars.
Keep an eye out for the secret platform, No. 61, which has an elevator connecting directly to the Waldorf Astoria hotel and was used by Franklin D Roosevelt.
The Grand Central/42nd St. subway station is Manhattan’s busiest, so be prepared for crowds.
How to get there
Sandwiched between SoHo and the Lower East Side, Little Italy is easily accessible using New York City’s comprehensive public transit system. The nearest subway stops are Canal Street on trains N, Q, R, W, J, Z, and 6 and Grand Street on trains B and D. Bus M1 also stops at Centre and Broome streets, a 2-minute walk from the heart of Little Italy. Alternatively, a Citi Bike bike-share dock is located on the corner of Lafayette and Howard streets.
When to get there
The station is open from 5:30am–2am; hours may vary for individual shops, cafés, and restaurants inside. The main concourse gets very busy with commuters during morning and evening rush hours, so plan your visit outside these times.
Grand Central’s food market
Grand Central has its own European-style food market under the main terminal, between the Graybar building and the 4/5/6 subway lines. Vendors sell fruits and vegetables, handmade chocolates, fresh bread, gourmet meats and cheeses, and more.
Ways to explore
Home to a number of eateries, including the storied Grand Central Oyster Bar and Restaurant, Grand Central Station is a popular dining destination. It’s also a top NYC people-watching spot.
You can learn the station’s history and visit spots you wouldn’t find on your own with a guided walking tour or self-guided audio tour. City tours often stop by Grand Central Station en route to other New York City landmarks such as Times Square and Central Park, and it’s a typical stop on walking tours focused on the city’s architectural heritage.
