Greenwich Audubon Center
613 Riversville Rd., Greenwich, CT, 06831-2624
A tranquil retreat for nature lovers and bird-watchers, the Greenwich Audubon Center is a Connecticut outpost of the National Audubon Society, dedicated to protecting birds and conserving their natural habitats. In this nature preserve and bird sanctuary, you can connect with nature via serene hiking trails and exhibits at the nature education center.
The basics
If you’re visiting Greenwich Audubon Center for the first time, start at the Kimberlin Nature Education Center, a hub of nature programs and bird-centered educational exhibits. After exploring the interactive exhibits, bird observation areas, and native plant gardens, head to the main sanctuary—a 265-acre (107-hectare) nature preserve with easy hiking trails. This is best explored on naturalist-led nature walks and bird-watching excursions. A small donation is suggested for visiting the center and hiking the trails.
Things to know before you go
Bring binoculars and a field guide to enhance your bird-watching experience.
Dress appropriately for outdoor activities; wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.
The visitor center has a souvenir shop and a café.
Accessible parking, restrooms, and an elevator are available, and you can borrow wheelchairs and motorized scooters.
Dogs aren’t allowed in the visitor center or on the trails.
How to get there
The Greenwich Audubon Center is a 15-minute drive from downtown Greenwich, Connecticut, near the Connecticut-New York Border—the route along Glenville Road and Riversville Road is typically the shortest. Ample parking is available on-site for visitors arriving by car. Public transport options are limited, but you can take a taxi from the Greenwich and White Plains train stations.
When to get there
The visitor center is open Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, and the hiking trails through the sanctuary are open daily from sunrise to sunset. There’s never a bad time to visit, but spring and fall are generally considered peak bird-watching seasons, as migratory birds pass through the area. Check the center's calendar for special events and educational programs.
Greenwich Audubon Center for Families
In tandem with the Bruce Museum, the Greenwich Audubon Center is the most family-friendly attraction in Greenwich. Here, there is no shortage of ways kids can engage with nature. Visit your children and take nature walks with experts of all kinds, build nest boxes for birds, and participate in nature scavenger hunts. Older or especially motivated children can help research scientists gather data on birdlife and their habitats.
