Gregangelo Museum
225 San Leandro Way, San Francisco, CA, 94127-1915
There’s nothing stuffy about this “museum,” the creation of a local artist and circus founder who turned an unassuming home in one of San Francisco’s most desirable neighborhoods into an immersive “fairy-grove” experience. Book one of eight themed tours, head inside, and explore “portals” filled with purposefully weird art along with your live performer/fairy guide.
The basics
Gregangelo doesn’t keep regular hours—you can book tours by appointment only. Depending on which tour you choose, you can focus on a labyrinth of nine interior installations, explore “outdoor” environments built by local artists, or experience magic tea rituals and tasseomancy (reading tea leaves). Tours are typically led by local artists and are limited to groups of 2–8 people. Expect to spend about 90 minutes to 2 hours at the museum.
Things to know before you go
Tours designed for families with kids 3 and under are available; otherwise, general tours are recommended for ages 7 and up.
While most tours are in English, the Tea in Wonderland tour is offered in Chinese.
The museum is a private home and isn’t wheelchair accessible; the climb inside requires getting up 11 steps.
There’s no food on-site, but you can grab a bite in the West Portal neighborhood nearby.
You can take photos inside when your guide specifies.
You can tip your guide via mobile payment apps.
How to get there
Set in the neighborhood of St. Francis Wood, the museum is easy to reach on public transportation; take the K or M MUNI metro line to West Portal Station or the 23 Monterey Bus. Taking public transit or rideshares is simplest, but if you’re driving you can find limited residential parking in front of the museum.
When to get there
The Gregangelo Museum is a private residence and doesn’t operate with regular opening hours—to visit, you need to book one of eight available tours online or make private arrangements. Check the online schedule before planning your visit, as some tours are available daily but most are offered from Thursday to Sunday.
Tours of the Gregangelo Museum
Since you’ll need to choose a tour, it can be helpful to know which one could work for you. Start with the “indoor” tour, an exploration of interior installations based on Alice in Wonderland, 1001 Arabian Nights, Dr. Seuss books, and other books and stories. The “outdoor” tour is popular, but you may want to take the indoor/outdoor combo tour to see as much of the museum as possible. Kids’ tours visit an enchanted fairy garden, while tea party experiences offer rare herbal concoctions.
