Gulf State Park
Gulf Shores, AL, 36542
With the largest pier in the Gulf of Mexico, more than 3 miles (5 kilometers) of white-sand beaches, and opportunities for hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities, this is one of the region’s most impressive state parks. It’s a vibe that’s part Caribbean splendor, part honky-tonk—a combo you can only find in Alabama.
The basics
Gulf State Park lies on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico—though don’t overlook the backcountry trails into the palmetto forests. The infrastructure here is visitor-friendly—there’s everything from a Hilton hotel to a nature center, cabins, restaurants, picnic pavilions, a fishing school, bike rentals, campgrounds, and beyond. Many people, though, are simply happy wandering the wide-open, sugary beaches and taking in the warm waves.
Pair your visit to Gulf State Park with a nature or sunset cruise, and you’ll get a full 360-degree look at this surprisingly serene area—you just might spot dolphins, too.
Things to know before you go
There is no entrance fee to Gulf State Park, though there’s a small fee for pier access (free for children under 12).
Day-use fishing permits are available for a daily fee.
A daily fee also applies to beach pavilion and pier access parking.
How to get there
You’ll definitely want a car. Gulf State Park is massive, and just getting from one attraction to another can be a drive. Just south of Gulf Shores International Airport, the park encompasses the majority of land between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. You could technically bike into and around the park, as well.
When to get there
The best time to visit Gulf State Park is in the spring and fall. These seasons offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and great conditions for hiking, biking, and frolicking on the beach. Birders will also enjoy the migratory bird sightings during these times. Summer is great for beachgoers, though it’s busier and warmer.
Getting on the water
At Gulf State Park, you can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards and get to paddling on the Shelby Lakes, a chain of lakes just past the sand. For something more wide-open, hop on a Gulf cruise, some of which bring islands into the mix, and appreciate the park’s gentle beauty from afar.
