Hamilton Grange National Memorial

New York City, NY

Fans of Hamilton—and other history buffs—will be interested in the 1802 home built by founding father Alexander Hamilton in uptown Manhattan, now a museum called the Hamilton Grange National Memorial. To visit the estate, join a free guided tour that includes the historically furnished rooms of the Grange. Here you’ll learn about the life and times of Hamilton, including the famous duel that resulted in his death.

The basics

The Hamilton Grange National Memorial, overseen by the National Park Service, is free and open to the public, offering 25-minute guided tours. Most visitors spend an hour or two here, joining a tour and also exploring the visitor center, which includes an exhibit space, bookstore, and a theater featuring a film about Hamilton and the history of the estate. Access to the grounds surrounding the Grange, made up of 3 acres (1 hectare) with scenic pathways, is free and does not require a tour. Educational activities for kids, including a junior ranger program, are available—check the website for details.

Things to know before you go

  • History enthusiasts, Hamilton fans, and families seeking educational activities will be drawn to the Hamilton Grange National Memorial.
  • The visitor center is located on the ground floor and is accessible; the historic floor is reached by climbing a set of stairs and the elevator is sometimes out of service (so confirm ahead of a visit).
  • All tours are offered on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations available (unless you have a group of 10 or more).
  • This historic house and museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

How to get there

Hamilton Grange National Memorial is located in St. Nicholas Park in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of uptown Manhattan. Public transit options include the 1 train to 137th Street or the A, B, C, or D trains to either the 135th Street or the 145th Street stop. Limited street parking is available.

When to get there

This museum is open from Wednesday through Sunday, and the grounds are open from morning to late afternoon/early evening; the visitor center keeps slightly shorter hours. Weekends offer more tours than weekdays, and since you can’t book ahead, arriving early is recommended.

Hamilton’s country estate

While Hamilton Grange National Memorial is now in the middle of a city neighborhood, it was a country estate during the lifetime of Alexander Hamilton. He originally purchased 30 acres (12 hectares), built the house, and planted a garden. The Grange is where Hamilton spent the last years of his life. Today, a tour of the historic home includes the dining room, the parlor or main entertaining space, and the study where Hamilton wrote and worked.
