Henderson Beach State Park
17000 Emerald Coast Pkwy, Destin, CO, 32541
Henderson Beach State Park became a public park in 1991 and added amenities like campsites, a playground, beach boardwalks, and a bathhouse soon after. It has some of the Panhandle’s last remaining coastal scrub communities, which are visible along the trails. Today, many people visit the beach throughout the year for camping, swimming, and wildlife viewing.
The basics
Henderson Beach State Park has the wow factor: 30-foot (9-meter) white sand dunes and pristine emerald gulf waters showcase the best of the Florida Panhandle’s natural beauty. But don’t think that the beach is the sole focus. The under-a-mile (1.2-kilometer) trail has great views of the dunes and an old military bunker. You can hike or bike the trail to the shoreline and cast a fishing line, search for geocaches, or try to spot gopher tortoises.
Things to know before you go
Guided tours are available upon request.
The beach and picnic areas are alcohol-free areas.
Pets are only allowed on the nature trail, not on the beach.
How to get there
To reach Henderson Beach State Park, head to 17000 Emerald Coast Parkway in Destin. You can access it by car immediately after crossing the Mid-Bay Toll Bridge or driving between Destin and Miramar Beach on Highway 98. This Florida state park charges all visitors: $6 per vehicle, $4 for a single-occupant vehicle, and $2 for pedestrians, cyclists, and extra passengers in a vehicle.
When to get there
Two of the best times to visit the park are early in the morning and in the late afternoon. Not only are crowds thinner and temperatures cooler, but it’s also when wildlife such as dolphins are most active. If you’re visiting in the summer, prepare for full parking lots and larger crowds by mid-afternoon.
More parks to explore
Henderson Beach State Park is a popular destination for a reason: the manageable trail and stunning beachfront make for a fun visit. If you want to avoid the crowds, you could head west toward the Fort Pickens State Park Aquatic Preserve, where more trails and beachside bliss await. If you head east, Point Washington State Forest treats you to more outdoor fun with several loop trails and seasonal hunting.
