Historic Antique Row in Philadelphia

924 Pine Street, Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, 19107

While visiting one of America’s most historic cities, take an opportunity to shop for unique antiques along Philadelphia’s Antique Row. The heart of this downtown district stretches along Pine Street, from Ninth and Eleventh Streets, where collectors can find shops packed with colonial-era wares and hard-to-find antique furniture.

The basics

Considered the oldest, continuously-operating antiques district in the country, Philadelphia’s Antique Row features stores and boutiques that mix old and new. It’s home to mainstays such as M. Finkel & Daughter, where you can find 17th-century needlework and silk embroideries, and the Chelsea Plating Company, which boasts expertly restored sterling silver table settings. Bear in mind that some shops are only open via appointment. Explore the city via hop-on hop-off tours that pass by Antique Row; bus passes range from 1-3 days.

Things to know before you go

  • Antique Row is part of the Washington Square West neighborhood, which borders the Midtown Village shopping district. You’ll find more stores along the nearby streets to the north, especially 13th Street.

  • A variety of bars, restaurants, and eateries are found throughout the area.

  • Some travelers report that there’s actually minimal antique shopping in the area but that the quaint neighborhood does feature historic architecture and lovely homes.

How to get there

Antique Row is located in downtown Philadelphia, just south of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital—it’s a short 12-minute walk from popular sites such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The area is accessible by several bus routes, with stops along Pine Street. The city’s rapid transit system, known as PATCO, stops at the 9/10th & Locust Street Station, a couple blocks from Pine Street.

When to get there

Spring and fall seasons are considered the best times to visit Philadelphia, especially if you plan to go window shopping, since the weather is usually the most pleasant then. The summer months (June, July, and August) are typically the most crowded, particularly in and around the historical attractions, with families traveling during school break. Keep in mind that some shops on Antique Row are only open via appointment.

Where to find Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Located a few blocks from Antique Row, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is home to unique mosaic art and murals. The creator, Isaiah Zagar, used handmade tiles, bottles, bicycle wheels, mirrors, and folk art to chronicle his life in this extraordinary way. The space is made up of two indoor galleries and a bi-level outdoor sculpture garden. You can participate in tours, art activities, hands-on experiences, workshops, concerts, exhibitions, and more.
