History Colorado Center
1200 Broadway, Denver, CO, 80203
History Colorado was established in 1879 and currently operates four historic sites and seven museums, including History Colorado Center. Here you’ll find exhibits, artifacts, and hands-on activities about the history of the state and the American West. The center also hosts regular lectures, rotating exhibits, and other events for kids and adults.
The basics
Even though it has permanent exhibitions, with a focus on both Denver and Colorado history, the museum is always evolving; one of the coolest recent additions is the Makerspace, an all-ages workshop with constructive experiences. Augmented with special presentations, this museum is one of the most comprehensive in the state, and some visitors like to experience it on historical walking tours of downtown Denver.
Things to know before you go
There’s an on-site café, and the gift shop also sells regional food.
Most exhibitions are interactive and accessible for all ages.
Many visitors tend to work their way down, starting with the top floor.
How to get there
History Colorado Center is located at 1200 Broadway in downtown Denver. Bus stops are on either side of the center on Lincoln and Broadway, and paid parking lots and metered parking are available nearby. Since parking is limited downtown, it’s best to either avoid visiting during major city events or take a taxi/rideshare to the center.
When to get there
The museum is open daily, except for some holidays, and the best time to visit is when it’s hosting an event. A number of diverse lectures, workshops, tours, and classes fill the calendar, offering an engaging way to learn more about the state’s history. The busiest times are typically around lunch, though Saturdays tend to see the highest visitor numbers. Expect to spend at least 2 to 3 hours there.
Visit the other History Colorado sites around Denver
History Colorado encompasses multiple historic sites and museums, so while you’re in Denver, you can also visit the Grant-Humphreys Museum, a former soiree space for Colorado’s elite and now a popular wedding venue, and the Center for Colorado Women’s History. Nearby are the Georgetown Loop Historic Mining & Railroad Park in Georgetown and Fort Vasquez in Platteville.
